EMPLOYMENT OF SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

  1. Substitute Selection - All substitute teachers will be selected by the principals from an approved substitute teacher list developed by the Superintendent's office.  Principals may veto someone from the list of approved substitutes for their building.

  2. The work day for a substitute shall be the same as for regular personnel in that position category.

  3. No Employee Benefits - A substitute teacher is not entitled to tenure, sick leave, vacation, retirement or other benefits provided to full-time, permanent employees.

  4. Short term Substitute - A substitute employed to replace a teacher who will be absent for less than 20 days is not required to hold a certificate. This person receives no benefits.  Service as a short term substitute will not count toward accrual of tenure or seniority.

  5. Long Term Substitute - If a substitute is replacing a teacher who will be absent for 20 or more days they will be offered a long term substitute contract which includes applicable benefits for a specified period of time and will be paid according to their B-0 or M-0 placement on the salary schedule.  Service as a long term substitute will not count toward accrual of tenure or seniority.  Long term substitutes who serve to the end of the school year must be notified of non-retention prior to the end of the year if they are not to be employed for the subsequent year.

  6. In-School Suspension Coordinator  - In the event a substitute is needed for the In-School Suspension Coordinator the substitute’s rate of pay will be that of a substitute teacher with a degree, Level 2, or a substitute teacher holding an Alaska teaching certificate, Level 3.

  7. Substitutes will be compensated at a daily rate of pay as outlined in E 4121.
